The Science of Fat Freezing: Here’s How It Really Works

Kate Apps

Fat freezing, also known as cryolipolysis, is arguably the most advanced non-surgical alternative to liposuction that reportedly eliminates stubborn pockets of fat naturally without any downtime.

It sounds too good to be true: targeted fat loss without any pain, physical exertion, unsightly scars, or prolonged recovery time. Any discerning consumer would be understandably sceptical of this seemingly miraculous treatment that promises to vanish those unyielding rolls of fat.

So how does freezing fat off work? More importantly, how much of it is marketing hype and how much is based on science? Let’s break it down.

The Discovery & Evolution of Fat Freezing Science

Originally discovered by Harvard scientists in 2004, cryolipolysis was a scientific breakthrough that led to the first FDA-approved fat freezing technology in 2010. Since that initial discovery, there have been subsequent new and improved fat freezing technologies developed in response to the overwhelming demand for it.

One of those enhanced technologies is Clatuu Alpha by Classys which features patented 360° cooling technology with dual applicators, allowing it to address two targeted areas at the same time instead of just one. This makes it a faster and more affordable treatment in comparison with the original technology.

Does Fat Freezing Really Work?

How much of fat freezing’s highly touted effects are proven and how much of it is marketing?

Let’s look at the research.

2009 study on the clinical efficacy of noninvasive cryolipolysis published in the National Library of Medicine reported findings that cryolipolysis effectively reduced the treated fat layer by 20.4% at 2 months and 25.5% at 6 months after treatment.

Within several weeks of treatment, the frozen, dead fat cells were excreted out of the body through the liver, revealing the full effects of the fat loss within three months.

So, the answer to the question “Does fat freezing really work?” is yes, fat freezing works, but with the caveat that it only works on subcutaneous fat.

Fat cells are usually stored in three forms: essential, subcutaneous, and visceral fat. Essential fat is what the body needs to be healthy and functional, while subcutaneous fat is found under the skin and forms the bulk of our body fat. It’s also how the body stores energy for later use.

Finally, visceral fat is the unhealthy fat that forms around our major internal organs, generally associated with obesity and health complications.

Let’s be clear: fat freezing doesn’t help with weight loss. It’s specifically a targeted fat loss treatment that only works on subcutaneous fat.

As we age, our body’s ability to remove subcutaneous fat decreases along with our reduced metabolic rate, making it harder to burn off the excess fat. Even thin people struggle to get rid of subcutaneous fat which commonly forms around the bra strap, under the chin, and around the love handles.

It’s also important to note that while it’s meant to be a permanent fat reduction solution, the effects are only permanent if you control your weight. Any subsequent weight gain will lead to an inevitable increase in your body fat.

Fat freezing has been proven to be an effective treatment on individuals with smaller pockets of stubborn, hard-to-shed fat, with the following added benefits:

  • No anaesthesia required and no risk of bleeding
  • Can be performed at your local medi-spa
  • Ability to resume work immediately without having to take time off
  • Visible results within 3 to 12 weeks
  • Lasting effects as long as you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen
  • Proven effectiveness of between 10% to 25% fat reduction from each session
  • Backed by science and patented technology

The science behind cryolipolysis has been endorsed by numerous medical professionals including board-certified dermatologist Paul Jarrod Frank, MD who opines that “If you reduce the temperature of fat to a certain degree, cells go into what’s called apoptosis, which means they kill themselves and your body digests its by-products. The magic of it is you’re cooling down the skin to a temperature where it hurts the fat, but it doesn’t hurt the skin, and that’s why it works so well.”

How Does Freezing Fat Off Work?

In essence, fat freezing treatments use Cryolipolysis machines to target fatty areas using non-invasive cooling suction cups or applicators. The targeted fat cells are destroyed in a process called apoptosis and naturally flushed out of the body through the lymphatic system over a period of 3 to 12 weeks with visible results from the first treatment.

The Clatuu fat reduction machine offers several added benefits:

  • It uses patented 360° cooling applicators that gently cool the targeted area to a temperature low enough to cause fat apoptosis without affecting the normal cells.
  • The dual applicators allow dual sculpting of two target areas at the same time for reduced session length and number of treatments.
  • Various applicator sizes target different body parts effectively.
  • Enhanced fat freezing treatment at competitive prices.

While the machine does its magic, you can lie back and relax, catch up on the latest Netflix release, or do some work on your laptop.
